Robert Bruns sold the family farm to the Sawmill Creek Association, a consortium of professionals and businessmen, on November 14, 1968. Sawmill Creek Lodge opened in 1972 followed by the golf course in 1973, marina and condominiums. The resort was sold to Cedar Fair, Cedar Point's parent company in 2019. (Video: Marian Hancy, 2009)

The Rye Beach school house sits across the street from Sawmill Creek. The school served the education needs of the children of West Huron until the village and township schools merged in the 1930s. It is now a private home.

Henry and Christina Beatty Bruns purchased the 210-acre farm that would later become Sawmill Creek Resort in 1868. Their son Lewis and his wife Sophia inherited the farm, which became well known for its egg and potato sales stand.Their son Robert sold the property in 1972.
