In 1837 Stephen and Polly Meeker, who came to the Firelands in 1811, gave their son, Aaron Wright Meeker, 160 acres of land along Lake Erie. He built a house in 1859, called the Old Homestead, which still stands today. When he died in 1896, the property was granted to Mr. Meeker’s second wife, Cynthia. Upon her death in 1902, the land was divided between their daughters, Martha (Metta) Meeker Breckenridge and Hannah (Hattie) Meeker Stein, with the land now known as Old Homestead inherited by Mrs. Breckenridge and the area that became Chaska Beach inherited by Mrs. Stein.
