Oklahoma
In 1877 50 acres of the Shirey ese was purchased by Stark Adams and John Wilbur who platted the land into lots. This area became known as Oklahoma, likely a playful reference to its relative distance to downtown. Essentially, “if you live out there, you might as well live in Oklahoma.” Today this neighborhood has grown to include the Parkridge expansion.

Forest Hills
Forest Hills, located south of Bogart Road, was another development established in the 1950s in response to Huron’s housing shortage. Firelands Homes of Vermilion built the Scholz California Contemporary homes on Forest Hills Drive and Valley View Drive. (Video: William Lucht, 2019)

The Boys of the West were a gang of young hunters and outdoorsmen, who spent much of their time in this shack located near Oklahoma, about where the bypass is today. The boys were John McCormick, Ed Thomas, Charles Weigand, Walter Thomas, Ed Weigand and Earl Shepherd and Spot the dog. They had a stove for heat and cooked the game they caught at the shack. John McCormick is holding a ferret which they used to chase rabbits out their holes.

Laura Beckloff, Lottie Toomey, Hannah Henes and Carrie Wilkes were members of the choir at the Huron Evangelical church. From the late 1910s to the mid 1930s they performed throughout the area including at the town hall opera house, Cedar Point and on the radio.

Donald Scholz founded Sholz Homes in Toledo to satisfy the increasing demand for housing created by the many returning soldiers. Among the many types of homes the the company designed, the California Contemporary was one of the most popular.

Although modest by today's standards, the California contemporary plans are spacious and open, with cathedral ceilings and ample windows. Each home has a patio in the back that is partially sheltered by the overhanging roof to further encourage outdoor activities. Kitchens are sleek and modern for the era, and Scholz offered high-end appliances from select manufactures as standard features.
